LASERDISC & DVD INFORMATION
Laserdisc is an older technology. It offered a better picture and better sound than videotapes, and it is comparable to DVD. But the laserdisc format is analog; DVDs are digital. Laserdiscs are only used for pre-recorded movies, and they are larger, about 12 inches in diameter, instead the 5-inch diameter of DVDs. Laserdiscs usually are recorded on both sides of the disc, one side can hold up to 1 hour. DVDs are only one sided and can hold up to 2 hours if recorded at SP speed. The two formats usually can't be played on the same machine.
Laserdiscs, like DVDs, allow viewers to go to the exact scene they wish to see, and to freeze a frame or slow the picture. Laserdiscs can only hold an hour on each side, so you have to flip the disc to watch the second half of the movie.
Because of DVD compression techniques, DVDs can hold more data. Laserdisc players are noisier than DVD players, and they can sometimes suffer "laser rot" -- the aluminum side of the disc oxidizes, and the quality of the disc deteriorates. DVDs are less likely to have this problem, because manufacturing techniques have improved. As the popularity of DVD grows, laserdiscs are becoming harder to find and if you have laserdiscs in your collection we can transfer them to DVD.
Our DVD recorders are not the cheap ones you find at most stores. Our DVD recorders have an enhancement system which restores the quality of your laserdisc during transfer and produces better quality than your original laserdisc. This means the DVD will look better than the original laserdisc!
MINI-DV & DVCAM: For future video editing of your videotapes we recommend transferring your video tapes to MINI-DV or DVCAM (tape) Master. This allows you to edit, capture prints, add music or sound, titles or transfer your videotape via "Firewire" to your computer using your DV deck or DV camcorder. (You must have a DV deck or camcorder & video editing software & hardware and a computer that can edit full frame video) Transferring DIRECT to a MINI-DV or DVCAM MASTER and making copies to DVD and VHS is recommended. We can also make a DV SUB-MASTER, DIRECT from the MASTER through the "Firewire" connection which results in a PERFECT COPY. We can also copy your DV MASTER through "Firewire" to DVD for distribution. (If you do not plan on editing or doing further manipulation of your videotapes then we recommend transferring them direct to DVD-R) Currently the maximum amount of videotape we can transfer to Mini-DV in SP Speed (best quality) is 60 minutes and 124 minutes to DVCAM
TYPE OF DISCS WE DO NOT TRANSFER:
NOTE: We do not transfer or convert "Capacitance Electronic Disc System" (CED) or HI-Vision LD from Japan or LaserActive discs or ANY (PAL) LaserDiscs. More info below.
We do not transfer or convert Capacitance Electronic Disc System discs or CED. They are of similar size to an LP or laserdisc but are in a protective plastic caddy. The format was commonly known as "videodisc" (VHD), leading to much confusion with Laserdisc (LD) format, which is mutually incompatible with this format. If your disc says "Capacitance Electronic Disc System" on the cover please do not send it to us. These are a very rare analog disc system launched in 1981 and discontinued in 1984 and from the research we have done we have found no companies that can provide this service and no systems that are available for sale. The playback quality of these discs would be VERY poor and not worth converting to DVD.
We do not transfer or convert HI-Vision LD Launched in Japan a new era of high-definition laserdisc launched in 1991- the first upgrade to depart completely from the original 1978 NTSC LD specification In September 1991 five major Japanese manufacturers - Matsushita (Panasonic), Pioneer, Sanyo, Sony, Toshiba - announced specifications for a new domestic LD format based on the 1125 line Hi-Vision system. If your disc says "HI-VISION LD" on the cover please do not send it to us. We do not have a player for these types of Laserdiscs.
We do not transfer or convert "LaserActive" discs. These are game or interactive laserdiscs and required a specific machine for playing.
