HIGH DEFINITION quality transfer of R8mm, Super 8mm & 16mm film (Sound or silent film). Film is transferred in High Definition for viewing on all HD (High Definition Televisions & Monitors). HDDTT transfer of silent, Super 8mm & 16mm film to HD Mini-DV & AVCHD
What to consider when wanting your movies transferred to 16:9 HD format. Super8, R8 and 16mm are all 4:2 format (square), HD is 16:9 or (rectangular), which means we have to compensate to make the film fit from 4:3 SD to "Full frame" 16:9 HD.
4:2 SD ORIGINAL FORMAT OF 8MM & 16MM FILM.
FULL FRAME 16:9 HD FORMAT TRANSFER (FAT HD OR INVERSE ANAMORPHIC) : Results in having to "crop" a portion of the films picture. It would remove approximate 1/4 of the film frame. This works if the majority of the original film shot is positioned in the middle. Otherwise it will cut off portions of the image in the frame. We try to compensate by by cutting off the bottom portion of the film rather than the top to make sure no "heads" or images that are in the top portion would be cut-off. Of course, what ever is in the bottom portion would be cut off, but the image on your HD TV, HD monitor or HD computer screen would be "FULL SCREEN" 16:9 HD.
Some companies place black bars on either the sides and or top and bottom of the film. This means the films image ends up being smaller than the full 16:9 format of your HD TV. If you want it full frame (FAT HD or "inverse anamorphic") it will have to be distorted or cropped to fit the full size of your HD TV. In order to have a non distorted 16:9 image, the film frame does not "fill" the entire HD TV screen, it will have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.
THE TRUTH: HD IMAGE TO FIT YOUR HD TV FULL FRAME; Your film either needs to be cropped, squished and or distorted to fit the full 16:9 HD format or "FAT HD". It is best to keep your film in the correct aspect when having your film transferred to HD. The quality is better than SD format and you will see more scratches, dust and out-of-focus parts of your home movies and this is why home movie film may not benefit from going to High Definition.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION WHEN CONSIDERING TRANSFERS OF HOME MOVIE FILM TO HIGH DEFINITION FORMAT
You would need the equipment & software to play, view, copy or edit your films in High Definition. AVCHD files and HD Mini-DV only play on compatible equipment and there are many variables to consider which makes HD a non standard format in the industry for home movies. We performed several tests on SD & HD film transfers. Our result is that the transfer of 8mm and 16mm B&W or colour film with an optimal transfer method does not benefit when transferring to HD. SD Telecine, Cinavision (frame by frame) & HDDTT (high resolution direct digital transfer technology) gives optimal results when transferring 8mm & 16mm home movie film. The only reason that might justify an HD transfer for these types of film would be for use in and HD production to retain the HD format, and when transferring to HD the film should be totally restored. No other type of application would provide enough benefit to justify an HD transfer. CONCLUSION: The amount of effort and money that would need to be invested into optimizing the quality of these original formats to HD could be better spent on restoring your films and transfer to SD format. TMTV Video Lab Department 2008. A study was also performed by CBC Technology Review which presented the same results as our tests.
In our opinion and experience in transferring motion picture film since 1980, HD is not always the best option for your S8mm, R8mm or 16mm home movie film unless the original picture it is in very good to excellent condition. Although the HD transfer quality is excellent, it does depend on the current condition of S8mm, R8mm or 16mm movie film. It also depends on the original equipment it was shot on, most transfers do not benefit by going to HD because the original film quality could be very poor to begin with and this does not necessarily make it look better, it would show even more of the imperfections such as, scratches, dust, out-of-focus or warped parts of the film. If the film is in poor physical condition, complete restoration of your home movie film can remove most of the small scratches and dust. If the film is warped or shrunk it would need our recovery service and transfer and this option is NOT available in HD. Click here for Movie film restoration & recovery information:
What’s better to transfer home movies to HD or SD? The first home movie transfers available to consumers were to Betamax and VHS. With the advent of DVD and its quality advantage over VHS, many people chose to re-transfer their home movies to DVD. Now, with the availability of HD video, is it worth considering re-transferring your home movies once again and is there more to consider than just resolution? The resolution of HD video exceeds the resolution of super 8 and regular 8 film and it is unlikely that any future technology will significantly surpass the quality of HD transfers. HD transfer not appropriate in all cases However, HD transfer may not be appropriate in all cases. For example, film shot on a poor quality camera or by an unskilled operator may to some, look better as SD than HD once transferred. This because the grain or other flaws are somewhat softened in an SD transfer but will be made more obvious in HD. If within your budget, opting for the HD transfer will allow you the option in the future of down converting it to SD if the look is preferable. On the other hand the SD transfer is clear and sharp and the difference between the two could only be described as very significant if the original 8mm film footage is of stellar quality. There are other considerations as important as the SD vs HD question. Capturing film to file formats The video capture device that is used on modern transfer equipment does a much better job than those available even only 10 years ago. These capture a more pleasant and clearer transfer without the glaring highlights and no detail shadows of the past. Also, the video files on a home player compatible DVD are no match to the usefulness and quality of the digital master files such as AVI, Quicktime and others that are now provided along with the convenience of a DVD, portable hard drive or USB drive. 16mm film is twice the size of 8mm film and transfers very well to HD but there is still the issue with the HD vrs SD (standard) film formats.

DUPLICATIONS OF YOUR HOME MOVIE FILM:
If you require further duplications of your home movie film, we recommend having them transferred DIRECT to DVD, BLUE-RAY, Mini DV or DVCAM. There is NO generation loss when transferring from DVD to DVD, Mini-DV or DVCAM. If you require VHS copies for distribution we can make those directly from your DVD, Mini-DV or DVCAM Master. Transferring to VHS is not recommended as a choice of preserving your home movies.
We convert your film to a digital format and preserve them in that format, (Mini-DV, DVCAM or DVD-R) for the primary reason that the images can then be transferred over and over without loss of quality. This is not true with analog formats, such as VHS or Betacam, where loss occurs with each subsequent transfer. This is called "generational loss". For example, if a VHS tape is copied to a second VHS tape, the quality of the second tape will be reduced. If the second tape is then transferred to a third tape, the quality of the third tape is reduced even further. In other words, each generation of the tape is reduced in quality.
This is not true of digital media, however. A Mini-DV, DVCAM or DVD can be copied over and over, from one generation to the next, without a loss of quality. Why? Because the digital format contains the computer code which can re-create the images, and which is preserved with each transfer, whereas the VHS (analog) tape contains electronic impulses, which diminish in their integrity with each transfer.

SUBMITTING ORDERS TO THE LAB:
If you choose to send films to our lab for transfer please e-mail or phone us before sending so we can make sure you are fully informed about the process and the options available.
When submitting film to the lab please number them CLEARLY in order of sequence, Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. (do not use POST-IT Notes, they fall off).
MIXING FILM FORMATS: R-8MM, S-8MM, 16MM with or without sound: If you have a mixture of different film formats (a combination of R-8mm, Super8, Super8 with sound or 16mm) we request that you do not mix the formats. Our system requires a complete changeover for each format, and therefore having to switch between formats for every reel adds significantly to the transfer time and would result in an additional service charge. To avoid this simply ensure that the order of your transfer places all reels of a certain format together (R-8mm & Super8, Super8 with sound 16mm or 16mm with sound respectively).
Let us know when and how you shipped them so we can keep track of the shipment for you.
Once the films arrive we will e-mail or phone and issue you an order number and we will perform a complete inspection on your films and schedule in the processing date. Please fill out the order form (if required) and send it with your order.
NOTE: There are NO refunds for transfers to HD formats if it is a compatibility issue. So if you choose to have your films transferred to any of the different HD formats make sure it will work with your system you want to view or edit with.
