Before requesting a quote for your film please prepare a physical description of your film as best you can. You may also send the film to our lab for a no obligation inspection and quote.

What is the format of your film, Regular 8mm, Super 8mm, 16mm or 35mm?

Does the film have a sound track? (99% of Regular/double 8mm film is silent), some Super 8mm or 16mm film could have a sound track).

What is the approximate date? (This helps determine the type of film and possible condition).

Approximately how long is each reel? measured in feet or reel size. (See chart sizes above).

Is the film colour or black and white?

Is it negative or positive film? (8mm and Super 8mm is usually positive film).

Is the film on reels or cores? (all 8mm and Super 8mm film would normally be on reels. Some 16mm & 35mm may be on cores).

What file format do you require? There are MANY options including: High Definition (HD), Standard Definition (SD) in the following file formats including; Numbered Image Sequence Images (NIS), .MOV, DVD in SD, Blu Ray HD masters or copies We can create copies of the masters for distribution to family and friends. The DVDs we create are not copy protected so you can make your own copies if you wish. Make sure you only make copies from the master to maintain quality. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT FILE FORMAT YOU REQUIRE AT THIS TIME DON'T WORRY, WE CAN HELP YOU WITH THIS DECISION

IF wanting DVD masters will you want to add titles, credits, menus or other introductory material to the masters and copies?

FILM CONDITION:

What decay and damage does the film exhibit: Does your film smell bad, look moldy or does it show physical signs of a white powder or dirt and dust, colour fading, shrinkage, warping and curling, image deterioration, tears, broken splices, damaged perforations, water damage or vinegar syndrome? (See ""More info" below if your film shows any of the above signs), otherwise just supply us the following; Film condition: Excellent, Good, Poor.

Most Super 8mm film is found to be in good condition, some regular 8mm film & 16mm film can be in poorer condition depending on its age and stored condition. If your film is in poor condition, has a white powder or smells like vinegar (or just smells bad), then your film will need to be cleaned, lubricated, restored & preserved or recovered. If your film is broken or the splices have come unglued or separated then splicing/editing will have to be performed. DO NOT USE HOUSEHOLD TAPE TO REPAIR OR SPLICE YOUR FILMS, use only the recommended film splicing tape or glue. If your films are mounted backwards on their original film reels then they will have to be remounted. Any film reels that are damaged, moldy or rusty will be replaced. More information on Movie film Recovery, cleaning, lubrication, restoration, preservation

DUPLICATIONS OF YOUR HOME MOVIE FILM:

If you require further duplications (COPIES, SUB-MASTERS ALSO KNOWN AS "ACCESS COPIES") of your home movie film, we recommend having them copied or duplicated direct from the DVD ARCHIVAL PRESERVATION MASTER (Digital Master).

We convert your film to a digital format and preserve them in that format, for the primary reason that the images can then be transferred over and over without loss of quality. This is not true with analog formats, such as VHS or Betamax, where loss occurs with each subsequent transfer. This is called "generational loss". For example, if a VHS tape is copied to a second VHS tape, the quality of the second tape will be reduced. If the second tape is then transferred to a third tape, the quality of the third tape is reduced even further. In other words, each generation of the tape is reduced in quality.

This is not true of digital media, however. DVDs can be copied over and over, from one generation to the next, without a loss of quality if mastered and copied in the same format and speed as the original DVD. Why? Because the digital format contains the computer code which can re-create the images, and which is preserved with each transfer, whereas the VHS (analog) tape contains electronic impulses, which diminish in their integrity with each transfer. If making copies, you always want to make the copies from the MASTER.

SUBMITTING ORDERS TO THE LAB:

If you choose to send films to our lab for transfer please e-mail or phone us before sending so we can make sure you are fully informed about the process, options available and provide a quote.

 CONTACT

When submitting film to the lab please number them CLEARLY in order of sequence, Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. (do not use POST-IT Notes, they fall off). Even if you do not know the sequence of your films, please number them to prevent missing a film during transfer.

MIXING FILM FORMATS: R-8MM, S-8MM, 16MM with or without sound: If you have a mixture of different film formats (a combination of R-8mm, Super8, Super8 with sound or 16mm with or with out sound) we request that you do not mix the formats. Simply ensure that the order of your transfer places all reels of a certain format together (R-8mm & Super8, Super8 with sound 16mm or 16mm with sound respectively) R-8mm is the older format and would usually be transferred first then we would transfer Super 8. 16mm film would be transferred to a separate DVD.

Let us know when and how you shipped them so we can keep track of the shipment for you. If you are shipping from the USA to Canada, PLEASE contact us BEFORE shipping for important shipping instructions.
