FILM SPEED

If you know the original film recording speed this helps in determining the correct speed when creating your DVD Master. Most Regular 8mm & Super 8mm film speeds are between 16 to 18fps. This depended on the original film speed setting on the camera. When creating a DVD we normally use a default 17FPS speed. You can request film speeds from 15FPS, 16FPS, 18FPS,  24FPS. Other output film speeds available on request.

We use only the BEST Kodak supplies in the processing, cleaning, restoration and editing of motion picture film

RECEIVING AN ESTIMATE OR A QUOTE BY E-MAIL FOR YOUR FILM TRANSFERS

Before requesting an estimate by e-mail for your film, please prepare a physical description of your film as best you can. You may also send the film to our lab for a complete hands-on inspection and no obligation quote.

PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR NAME, LOCATION & PHONE NUMBER.

What is the format of your film, Regular 8mm or Super 8mm?

Does the film have a sound track? (99% of Regular/double 8mm film is silent), some Super 8mm film could have a sound track).

What is the approximate date? (This helps determine the type of film and possible condition).

Approximately how long is each reel? measured in feet or reel size. (See chart sizes above).

Regular 8mm & Super 8mm film reel sizes are as follows:

Length film speed @ 18 fps
50' S8 3:31-R8 3:55 minutes (3" reel)

HOW MUCH 8MM FILM CAN FIT ON A DVD DISC?: Film scanned and uploaded to an Archival Preservation Master DVD-R in Mpeg-2 can hold approx. 1 hour or 850 feet of Super 8mm or 765 feet of 8mm movie film.  We will transfer your films to the maximum length of the DVD disc (1 Hour) at the best recording speed of XP for film transfers. If your films are longer than 1 hour we will put them on a second DVD master disc as a set or depending on how large your order is you may require a multiple DVD Master Set.

FILM CONDITION: What decay and damage does the film exhibit: Does your film smell bad, look moldy or does it show physical signs of a white powder or dirt and dust, colour fading, shrinkage, warping and curling, image deterioration, tears, broken splices, damaged perforations, water damage or vinegar syndrome? (See ""More info" below if your film shows any of the above signs), otherwise just supply us the following; Film condition: Excellent, Good, Poor.

Most Super 8mm film is found to be in good condition, some regular 8mm film & 16mm film can be in poorer condition depending on its age and stored condition. If your film is in poor condition, has a white powder or smells like vinegar (or just smells bad), then your film will need to be cleaned, lubricated, restored & preserved or recovered. If your film is broken or the splices have come unglued or separated then additional repairs/splicing/editing will have to be performed. DO NOT USE HOUSEHOLD TAPE TO REPAIR OR SPLICE YOUR FILMS, use only the recommended film splicing tape or glue. If your films are mounted backwards on their original film reels then they will have to be remounted. Any film reels that are damaged, moldy or rusty will have to be replaced. More information on Movie film Recovery, cleaning, lubrication, restoration, preservation

AFTER SCANNING: All your original film material is returned along with the new masters or copies after transfer. It is recommended that you preserve all of your films and any media provided through safe storage in a cool, dry environment. We back-up and store your original film files along with the edited file we created for your DVD Master for a period of 30 days (Approximately 30 days from the time you receive your order). It is recommended that you have copies or sub-masters created directly from the master as a back-up access copy before we delete your back-up files.

SUBMITTING ORDERS TO THE LAB:

When submitting film to the lab please number them CLEARLY in order of sequence, Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. (do not use POST-IT Notes, they fall off. Even if you do not know the sequence of your films, please number them.

DO NOT MIX FORMATS WHEN NUMBERING THE FILMS. MIXED FILM FORMATS: R-8MM or S-8MM with or without sound: If you have a mixture of different film formats (a combination of R-8mm, Super8, Super8 with, or without sound) we request that you do not mix the formats. Simply ensure that the order of your transfer places all reels of a certain format together (R-8mm, Super8 or Super8 with sound respectively) R-8mm is the older format and would usually be transferred first, then we would transfer Super 8. If you have 16mm film it would be transferred to a separate DVD.

If you choose to send films to our lab for transfer please e-mail or phone us before sending so we can make sure you are fully informed about the process, options available, pricing or an estimate based on your volume and any required special shipping instructions. Let us know when and how you shipped your films so we can keep track of the shipment for you. If you are shipping from the USA to Canada, PLEASE contact us BEFORE shipping for important shipping instructions.
