ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE
Dec 31, 2009 - Icy road conditions and light snow may have been a factor in a fatal accident on Highway 3A near the Bonnington straight on December 30.
At approximately 4:15 p.m., a northbound vehicle with two occupants from Winlaw, B.C. lost control and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. The vehicle struck a southbound vehicle with two residents of Christina Lake, B.C.
The Beasley Fire and Rescue, Emergency Health Services, Nelson RCMP, the Integrated Road Safety Unit and the West Kootenay Traffic Services were all on scene at the accident.
All four people involved in the crash were injured and the adult male passenger from Winlaw later succumbed to his injuries. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The condition of the other passengers is not known at this time.
The section of Highway 3A was closed for approximately one hour then reopened to single lane traffic. Later, the road was fully opened but traffic remained heavy due to the backup.
The RCMP is continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
All attending units remind the public to take exceptional care while driving on winter road conditions.
