NEW
PHOTO STUDIO OPENS – OFFERS
FREE FACEBOOK PORTRAITS
February
2010 – Two of the most talented
photographers in Nelson, BC, have combined
forces and are celebrating the grand opening
of their new studio on Friday, February 12
beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Heather
Goldsworthy of Imageobscura and Melissa
Welsh of Melissa Welsh Photography and Wonow
Media Ltd, are inviting everyone to their
location at 560 Baker St, Unit 3, where
there will be wine and appetizers served.
The two are also offering free studio
sessions that night, capturing Facebook
profile pictures for guests. (Fun backdrops
and costumes will be on hand in case people
want to get funky with their images.)
“Heather and I
studied photography together 10 years ago
and besides being great friends we have
offered each other a lot of support in our
businesses over the years,” Melissa says.
“When the chance came up to share a studio
space, I jumped at the opportunity.”
The
600-square-foot studio, which will be
available for rent by other photographers
and artists, features soft, natural lighting
via a central skylight, as well as strobe
lighting, stands, tripods, reflectors and
tabletop working area. The space also has a
comfortable, open seating area that allows
for client meetings, critiquing events and
brainstorming sessions.
“We believe in
building an involved, creative community,
not fostering competition between artists,
so our door is always open,” says Heather.
“Drop by for a brainstorming session, flip
through photography magazines and design
books or just poke your head in to say hi.”
Melissa Welsh
is a multi-disciplined photographer who
specializes in photographing people. Her
work can be found in private collections
around the world as well as in regional,
national and international publications. She
has shifted focus for 2010 and is committed
to shake things up in the family portrait
genre.
Specializing
in commercial and food photography, Heather
Goldsworthy provides a wide range of
location and studio photography services
including product photography for websites
and packaging. In particular she is excited
to offer her newest service – “Hot Shots.”
Designed for business owners, Hot Shots
allows you to have your product photographed
on a clean white backdrop and a resultant
image file within two hours. It’s the ideal
service for websites, online merchandising
and cataloguing. Imageobscura is the only
company in the Kootenays to offer this type
of service to local business owners.
Heather and
Melissa look forward to seeing everyone at

Zumba Latin
Dance Fitness dancing up a storm in Rossland
If you love to groove to Latin music and are
looking for an incredibly fun way to add new
fitness to your New Year regime Zumba is the
answer.
This fitness concept has been growing
internationally in popularity and fitness
instructor Amber Hayes is now the local
Zumba certified instructor teaching classes
with both Rossland Recreation and Better
Life Fitness. The style includes a variety
of international styles and music including
salsa, meringue, belly dancing, cumbia and
reggaeton and offers great cardio!
Asked about the popularity of these classes
Hayes responds “ Zumba classes incorporate
really key elements to a successful fitness
program – a good cardio workout that is
achieved through having fun so participants
actually look forward to their workout. We
have every age from teen through to 60+ ;
participants can have a variety of fitness
levels from beginner to advanced since we
can achieve different workout levels
depending of the energy they put into the
different dances. You don’t have to be a
great dancer by any means – you learn some
new steps, the chorography is a blast and
participants spend so much time laughing,
dancing, shaking it up they don’t even
notice the hour go by. “
Classes have become so popular that a new
night Tuesdays 5:15 -6:15 pm has been added
to the Miners Hall schedule and it is
recommended participants pre register for
new classes at Better Life Fitness. The
instructor reminds folks who want to come
out – it is a workout so wear clothes you
can move and (gasp) sweat in.
The Zumba concept was started by a Columbian
fitness instructor Beto Perez when he forgot
his Jane Fonda type workout music and did
his routine instead to his own Latin tapes.
In 2001, now in Miami Beto began
standardizing Zumba routines for other
fitness instructor and Zumba is now an
international phenomenon. If you want to
give the classes a try – first class is
always free at the Miners Hall in Rossland
Mon/Wed 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays 5:15-6:15 pm and
more classes are starting in February at
Better Life Fitness in Rossland.

artists, visit art galleries, museums and cultural
centres to view special interpretive displays,

K.A.T.I Executive Director, Monica Carpendale will
be showing her two films about art therapy.
The first is a 50 minute film about the use and
value of art therapy for a woman healing from
chronic post-traumatic stress disorder. The second
is a 30 minute film about a woman with multiple
handicaps who used art therapy as a means of
expressing her inner thoughts and feelings in a
symbolic and emotional way.
‘An
Angel with a Broken Wing’ Art Therapy
and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – Film
This story is about
identity and survival. The film explores the
client’s dynamic relationship with the art therapy
as well as her art therapist by focusing on the
closing art review. It also includes several songs
the client wrote and an interview done eight years
later reflecting back on the art process. Many key
issues are revealed in the context of reviewing her
artwork. Her ability to express herself through art
and metaphor is evident throughout as she speaks
passionately of how art therapy has saved her life.
The artist client’s interest in participating in
this film is to have her art and therapeutic process
be of value in helping others.
The
Art of Lorraine Beninger:Personal
Maps and Collage Constructions – Film
This inspiring film
conveys the excitement of discovering a media and
method of creating art that was both emotionally
satisfying and symbolically meaningful for an
individual with multiple handicaps. Someone who is
mentally and physically handicapped, including being
legally blind, can very effectively use creative art
making within a therapeutic process. Symbols, themes
and color in her art gave expression to her anger,
fear, sadness, warmth and humor. The use of tactile
materials enabled her to be successful in creating
art and reduced her anxiety about her worsening
eyesight. Lorraine hopes this film will be shown
“all around the world” to inspire people to offer
art therapy to individuals living with disabilities.

CBT'S COMMUNITY INITIATIVES PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING
APPLICATIONS
(Columbia Basin) - Columbia Basin Trust's (CBT)
Community Initiatives (CIP) and Affected Areas
Programs (AAP) are currently accepting applications
across the Basin for community-supported projects.
The CIP and AAP are CBT's largest and longest
running programs and will provide communities with
$3.3 million in 2010. This is the third of a
three-year $10 million-commitment by CBT.
"As long-standing programs at CBT, the CIP/AAP are
intended to be flexible to help address the needs of
individual communities and decisions on how to best
disburse the funding are community-based," said Neil
Muth, CBT President and CEO.
All areas of the Basin receive CIP funding, while
additional AAP funds are allocated to areas of the
Basin most affected by dam construction under the
Columbia River Treaty. These areas are part of the
Arrow, Kinbasket, Duncan and Koocanusa Reservoirs.
Funds for these programs are allocated on a per
capita funding formula and are distributed once a
year to CBT delivery partners: the Regional
Districts of East Kootenay, Central Kootenay,
Kootenay Boundary, City of Revelstoke, Town of
Golden, the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa
Nation Council.
For application forms and guidelines, visit

Provincial,
National & International Call to Artists, Workshops,
News and Contests:
___________________________________________
Seeking support for a province-wide advocacy
campaign to restore arts funding in British Columbia
to the 2008 / 2009 levels.
You are probably
aware of
Creativity Counts: Restore Arts Funding Now
through communications from Junko Sakamato, Trudy
Van Dop and others. Full details, and our advocacy
toolkit, can be found at
www.creativitycounts.ca.
To date nearly 7,000 British Columbians have
responded to this campaign by sending email messages
through the website (where you will find an
auto-letter program) to the premier and their own
MLAs.
If you haven't already done so, please take a moment
to send a letter, and encourage your friends,
colleagues and members to do the same.
Creativity Counts
is emerging as our collective voice in an extended
campaign to demand a comprehensive and sustainable
provincial arts funding policy – one that will
ensure that no future government can ever again
treat the arts as an expendable “frill”.
We need to keep up the pressure right through to the
March 2 presentation of the next budget, and
continue developing the network and strategies to
keep
Creativity Counts at the top of
the agenda between now and the next provincial
election.
There are three ways you can help support this
campaign:
1. Propose A
Municipal Resolution: The Union of BC
Municipalities, several BC municipalities, and the
Metro Vancouver Regional District board have all
adopted resolutions calling on the provincial
government to restore arts funding to previous
levels. A copy of the template for this resolution
is attached. Check with your municipal government
and if they have not already done so encourage them
to adopt a similar resolution and forward it to
Premier Gordon Campbell. Susan Jersak of Powell
River will be making calls to Assembly members
across the province in the next several days to
encourage and track action on this initiative.
2. Distribute
Pins & Bookmarks (and Raise Money!): We
have created a lapel pin and bookmark to raise
public awareness of our campaign. You can help
distribute these pins and bookmarks in your own
community, and raise a little extra cash for your
organization as well.
3. Make A
Personal Donation: We have developed a
fundraising appeal that works a bit like a chain
letter. Everyone who makes a personal donation to
the Alliance's advocacy fund receives a version of
this letter with their own name at the bottom, to
forward to their own circle of friends and
colleagues. Please consider making a donation.
I thank you in advance for your time in reviewing
this material and for your collaboration now and in
the weeks and months to come.

Dear Friends of BC Arts and Culture,
This past week I had the opportunity to
visit communities in the Cariboo and Chilcotin
to meet with arts, culture, and heritage groups in
100 Mile House,
Williams Lake,
Quesnel,
Barkerville and
Wells, BC.
The joke that I often heard from people in these
communities was that they are “beyond Hope” – both
in terms of their location outside of the Lower
Mainland but more significantly because of the
effects of the BC Liberal government’s attack on
investments in arts, culture, and heritage in BC, as
well as health care and education.
However despite these challenges, the talented
artists that I met and the incredible volunteer and
community support that I encountered, shows that
despite the cuts there is still a vigorous cultural
scene in rural BC where folks continue to share
their work and their stories helping us all know
each other, and our province.
However the effect of the BC Liberal government’s
massive cuts to arts and culture are very much being
seen in rural BC. And while we all hold out hope
that funding for the arts will increase with the
March 2nd Provincial Budget, unless this government
reverses its cuts there will be a number of arts
groups in this region and throughout the province
that will be forced to close their doors.
Speech from the
Throne
In yesterday’s
Speech from the Throne, the provincial
government referred to arts and culture as providing
competitive value to the BC economy. However there
were no clear commitments made to restoring much
needed investments in arts, culture, and heritage in
our province. The BC Liberal government needs to put
its money where its mouth is and follow the
recommendations made by the bi-partisan Finance
Committee this past Fall to fully restore funding to
2008 levels.
We will restore true and meaningful support for the
arts in BC and we must work together to continue
that fight.
Sincerely,
Spencer Herbert Official Opposition Critic for
Tourism, Culture and the Arts MLA - Vancouver West
