14th ANNUAL BURN AWARENESS WEEK SET FOR FEBRUARY 7 TO 13

Scalds, not fire, are the most common cause of burns to children
Majority of parents don’t know about this burn hazard

Over $6,000 in prize money to elementary schools participating in
Burn Awareness Week Poster Contest

VANCOUVER, BC – The BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund’s 14th Annual Burn Awareness Week (BAW) program runs February 7 to 13, 2010.

Available online at www.burnfund.org, BAW teaches kids to be responsible for their own safety, and helps make their families aware of potentially harmful situations.

To encourage student participation, the Burn Fund runs the annual Burn Awareness Week Poster Contest.  Every entrant receives a participation prize and fifty students will win money for their elementary school or BC Ministry of Education sanctioned distance education facility.  There are seven regional prizes, including a $1,000 grand prize and six $500 regional prizes.  Regions are the Lower Mainland (three winners), Vancouver Island, Kootenays, Northern BC and the Okanagan (one winner for each area).  Forty-three students win runner-up prizes of $50 each for their school or distance education facility.  Complete prize details, rules and regulations are available online

Burn Awareness Week Program

Public and private elementary schools in British Columbia, parents, students – anyone – can access the program online, which includes burn awareness safety tip information, student activity sheets, quizzes, coloring pages, and animated videos.  The program is available in PDF format for easy download and printing.

Educational, fun and interactive, the program includes age-appropriate safety lessons intended for Pre-School (two to four year olds); K/Grade 1; Grade 2/3; Grade 4/5; and Grade 6/7.
Some lessons are also available in French, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Punjabi.

The Burn Hazard

A majority of Canadian parents aren’t aware of the scald and burn hazards in their homes.  A survey by Safe Kids Canada found that 70 per cent of Canadian parents did not know that the most common cause of burn injuries to children is scalds from hot liquids, such as spilled hot drinks and hot tap water, rather than fire.

“Most adults realize that children need to be kept safe from fire or hot objects like the stove, but they do not realize that hot liquids are just as dangerous,” says Tim Baillie, Burn Fund Director and Chair of the Burn Awareness Week Program. “Hot liquids burn just like fire.”

Each year an estimated 9,000 children in Canada visit hospital emergency room for burns, and almost half of these have suffered scalds from hot liquids.  Close to 1,000 Canadian children are hospitalized each year for severe scalds and burns.  Approximately 50 per cent of these children are hospitalized for scalds alone. (Source: Safe Kids Canada)

In British Columbia, more than 200 children are hospitalized for scald burns and thousands more are treated in emergency departments.  Data collected over a five-year period in BC showed 453 children (birth to five years) hospitalized because of burns from hot liquids.  During the same time frame, Children’s treated 343 young children for scald burns — 87 per cent of these injuries occurred at home, with an average of 40 per cent occurring in the kitchen and 9.3 per cent in the bathroom.  (Source: BC Children’s Hospital)

Scalds from hot tap water are often the most severe.  Children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive.  A child’s skin burns four times more quickly and more deeply than an adult’s skin at the same temperature.  Most home hot water heaters in Canada are set at 60° Celsius (140° Fahrenheit).  At this temperature, a child’s skin can burn in just one second.

The Burn Fund urges parents to study this important burn and scald safety information and to spend some time with their children to review the online Burn Awareness Program. [Ed. Note: A list of scald and burn prevention safety tips is available upon request.].

The Burn Fund is a registered charity established in 1978 by the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association.  It provides life saving, life supporting, and life enriching services to the people in British Columbia.  More than 3,700 professional fire fighters from fifty communities in British Columbia and Yukon dedicate their time and skills to support burn survivors and increase the public’s knowledge about fire and burn safety issues through the work the Burn Fund does with its Burn Awareness, Research and Prevention Programs.

The 14th Annual Burn Awareness Program is sponsored by Capilano Suspension Bridge,
Province of British Columbia, TELUS, RBC Foundation, Global TV BC, Canwest Community Publishing, The Old Spaghetti Factory, and Panago Pizza.

Saltwinning: Equal to or Greater Than

Opening: 7pm, Friday, January 15th at Oxygen Art Centre.

Exhibition runs Jan 15 - Feb 13th. Wed-Sat, 1-5pm.

Max Liboiron is a mixed media artist and scholar from Winlaw and New York. She has been creating Saltwinning: Equal to or Greater Than during a residency at Oxygen over the last 3 weeks.

Using trash and waste materials, Max creates miniature dioramas and installations where viewers are invited to interact with the pieces.

During the Saltwinning residency Liboiron has collected garbage in the Nelson, B.C. area and transformed it into miniature dioramas. Each is immersed in a salt solution made from salt from the streets of New York City, causing salt crystals to grow and imbue the scenes with a crystallized sheen. Each of the fragile objects is then encapsulated in a kiln-slumped bell-jar made from a reclaimed glass container. A large architectural iceberg constructed of discarded Styrofoam forms, nests the one hundred finished globes, inviting viewers to discover the miniature worlds within. Visitors are invited take a piece and exchange it for something of equal or greater value. A cross between environmental advocacy, field research, and a “laboratory” experiment, Max's installations provide data about how people take up, challenge, and expand the "rules" of the exhibition.

Max's work has been shown in the Canada, Ireland, and the US. She holds an MFA and certificate in cultural studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and BFA with Distinction from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. She is currently earning a doctoral degree in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University.

Monday Night at the Movies

To chase away our January blues, our next Monday Night at the Movies will present the beautiful film:

SERAPHINE, on January 25th, 7pm at the Kootenay Centre Cinemas, Castlegar.

Winner of multiple awards in France, and a special presentation at the Toronto Film Festival, this movie brings back to life an obscure painter , Seraphine de Senlis, whose works adorn some of the world's most famous galleries. She was a simple house keeper whose daytime hours were spent with the solitary duties of laundry, cleaning and ironing. In her spare time, however, she immerses herself in the wonders of nature .Her intimacy with the trees, birds and insects around her inspires her to express her feelings on canvas and in her room she produces wondrous paintings of flowers. The locals scorn her work – she's just a housekeeper and a woman, after all - but she's discovered by a German art critic and her life is turned around. Director Martin Provost brings Seraphine's vibrant character to the screen as a testament to the resilience and creativity of one woman's spirit and as a celebration of art and nature but also acknowledging the costs .involved.

Tickets $9 each are available at the Castlegar Library and at the door. For more information, call the Gallery at 365-3337 or visit our website at www.kootenaygallery.com. Judy Wearmouth Movie Series Committee Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science http://www.kootenaygallery.com

Trail Arts Council’s Sunday Cinema – 3rd Series, (January & February, 2010)

Royal Theatre, Trail  Sundays at 4  Admission - $8.00  Series pass - $35.00

31 JANUARY    CREATION    RUNTIME: 108 minutes  http://creationthemovie.com/

Struggling to accept his daughter's death, Charles Darwin is torn between his love for his deeply religious wife and his own growing belief in a world where God has no place. He finds himself caught in a battle between faith and reason, love and truth. This is the story of Charles Darwin and how his master-work "The Origin of Species" came to light. It tells of a global revolution played out in the confines of a small English village; a passionate marriage torn apart by the most provocative idea in history—evolution; and a theory saved from extinction by the logic of a child. DIRECTOR:  Jon Amiel CAST: Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, Jeremy Northam, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martha West COUNTRY: United Kingdom Language: English

7 FEBRUARY     THE YOUNG VICTORIA  RUNTIME: 100 minutes http://www.theyoungvictoriamovie.com/

On the eve of her 18th birthday and succession to the English throne, young Princess Victoria is caught in a royal power struggle. But it is her blossoming love affair with Albert that will determine the strength of her reign.

Can she dedicate her life to her country and her heart to the one man she truly loves? The Young Victoria exposes the passion and romance behind one of history’s greatest love stories.

DIRECTOR:  Jean-Marc Vallée CAST: Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Mark Strong COUNTRY: United Kingdom Language: English, German

14 FEBRUARY   THE LAST STATION   RUNTIME: 112 minutes  http://www.sonyclassics.com/thelaststation/

Set in the last tumultuous years of author Leo Tolstoy's life, centers on the battle for his soul waged by his wife Sofya Andreyevna and his leading disciple Vladimir Cherkov. Torn between his professed doctrine of poverty and chastity and the reality of his enormous wealth, his thirteen children and a life of hedonism, Tolstoy makes a dramatic flight from his home. Too ill to continue beyond the tiny rail station at Astapovo, he believes that he is dying alone, while over one hundred newspapermen camp outside awaiting hourly reports on his condition.

DIRECTOR:  Michael Hoffman CAST: James McAvoy, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti, Helen Mirren COUNTRY: Germany, Russia, United Kingdom Language: English

21 FEBUARY     Me and Orson Welles (tentative)   http://www.meandorsonwellesthemovie.com/

Based in real theatrical history, 'Me and Orson Welles' is a romantic coming-of-age story about a teenage actor who lucks into a role in Julius Caesar as it's being re-imagined by a brilliant, impetuous young director named Orson Welles at his newly-founded Mercury Theater in NYC, 1937.
