TMTVNEWS.COM,
Kimberley BC, Saturday Feb
4, 2012 --- A second
avalanche in as many
days has happened in the Kootenays.
Kimberley Search and
Rescue and B.C.
Ambulance Service
personnel were
called Saturday
afternoon to the
Hell Roaring Creek
area near the town
of Kimberley, in
BC's southeast
interior after two
people were caught
in a slide.
Kimberley RCMP can
confirm they
received a report of
an emergency locator
beacon going off at
4:30 pm (MST). The
two backcountry
skiers were rescued
after being caught
in an avalanche with
one skier sustaining
critical injuries.
Police learned that
two persons, a man
and woman were
involved in an
avalanche. One of
the persons involved
was able to go for
help, the second was
injured.
“The pair used a
spot beacon to send
for help,” said
search manager Wendy
Hetherington.
The female did
not have any
noticeable injuries.
The male sustained
critical injuries.
Some circulating
reports indicated he
may have lost his
arm in the slide,
but Kimberley Search
and Rescue could not
confirm.
The area is a
popular recreational
spot especially with
locals, Hetherington
said, adding the
pair are believed to
be area residents.
